Terrible Demonstrations because of a law For few days, thousands of students have taken to the streets to protests against a new “disastrous” law. Jakarta police fired tear gas on Monday 30 October as they battled protesters angered by Indonesia's new corruption law and proposed criminal code. New Penal Code includes one-year prison sentence for sex outside marriage. The law also penalizes abortion, except in cases of rape or medical emergency, and prohibits criticizing the president and the state. Penalties of up to four years and fines are envisaged for those who have broken the law. Students are the ones most affected by this new law so they acted the most. For example, students hung banners on Parliament’s gates before being dispersed by police using water cannons and tear gas. Violent forest fires cause toxic smoke Indonesian police said they have arrested 230 people on suspicion of starting some of the fires which have spread health-damaging haze across a large part of southeast Asia. At the origin of fires, they are often fires lit illegally to clear deforested land or for slash-and-burn crops.  Nearly 9,000 firefighters and soldiers are fighting tirelessly against the flames in Indonesia in an attempt to extinguish forest fires raging on Sumatra Island, as in Borneo, and release a vast cloud of toxic smoke that has seriously deteriorated air quality and disrupts air links.      An amazing archeological discovery  Two years ago, an Australian scientist and archaeologist team discovered very old cave art in Leang Bulu ‘Sipong 4, Sulawesi. This week, the findings about its date have been published in Nature by archaeologists from Griffith University, Brisbane, Australia.  The paintings would be at least 44,000 years old. While this is not the oldest drawing ever found compared to last year’s 73,000-year-old art discovered in South Africa, but it is the oldest cave art in the whole world.  It is very surprising because the images of this level of sophistication which have already been found were about 20,000 years old and was more basic creation such as handprints. The patterns of that painting show capacity for early imagination and some old myths.  However, caves like this one are discovered every year and a minimum 242 caves with similar paintings and cave art have been located in Indonesia....

           Bad news for Indonesia’s biodiversity  Last week, two Sumatran elephants and a Sumatran rhino died in Indonesia, a terrible piece of news for these endangered species.  Last week, a female Sumatra elephant was found dead in Aceh province. The authorities think that the 25 years old female had been poisoned or electrocuted because the body was found next to a palm oil plantation. Elephants - especially during the rainy season - visit palm oil plantations and eat palm fruit.  Sadly, another Sumatran elephant was found dead earlier this week in Riau province. This elephant had been killed by poachers, who left it decapitated without its tusks. One year after report tells more about Lion Air Crash  In October 2018, 189 people died in the crash of a Boeing 737 MAX. Lion Air flight 610 crashed in the Java Sea thirteen minutes after it took off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.  A recent report lists many factors.  According to the final report of the Indonesian investigators on the accident, the plane crash was not due to a problem of conception. Actually, the factors of the crash were multiple.  The investigator Nurcahyo Utomo found nine. Serial killer Earthquakes keeps hitting Indonesian Islands Thursday 25 September, a new earthquake hit Indonesia. It was located on the little isolated island of Maluku, a province in the east of Indonesia. 20 people died during this natural disaster. The epicenter of the 6.5-magnitude earthquake was about 30 kilometers from Ambon, the capital of Maluku Province. Indonesian scientists said the earthquake was detected around 8h45 a.m. on local time. This hasn't been declared a tsunami but it has been described as a "strong" quake. The town which has been hit by this earthquake was Ambon, the capital of Maluku province, a city of 300,000 people. More than 100 people were injured by the quake and more than 2000 have been displaced from their home.
