Terrible Demonstrations because of a law
For few days, thousands of students have taken to the streets to protests against a new “disastrous” law. Jakarta police fired tear gas on Monday 30 October as they battled protesters angered by Indonesia's new corruption law and proposed criminal code. New Penal Code includes one-year prison sentence for sex outside marriage. The law also penalizes abortion, except in cases of rape or medical emergency, and prohibits criticizing the president and the state. Penalties of up to four years and fines are envisaged for those who have broken the law.
Students are the ones most affected by this new law so they acted the most. For example, students hung banners on Parliament’s gates before being dispersed by police using water cannons and tear gas. These demonstrations resulted in the deaths of two students as well as 265 students and 39 police officers injured. These demonstrations did not affect that jakarta because similar clashes also took place in other Indonesian cities, notably in the city of Bandung, in the west of Java, and in Makassar, capital of Southern Sulawesi Province, where a student was seriously injured on Friday after being accidentally hit by riot armor. The actions began to become increasingly catastrophic as protesters blocked the toll road next to Parliament and destroyed part of the fence. After being pushed from the building, some demonstrators burned tires and damaged a police station near a nearby bridge. At least three people were arrested in Jakarta. At nightfall, at least 100 protesters stayed, singing and waving the Indonesian flag, while some managed to demolish the doors of the parliament.
These new laws will bring about radical changes that activists have described as a disaster for human rights and democratic freedoms. The protesters also called on the government to repeal a law passed last week that should severely limit the investigative powers of the Indonesian anti-corruption body, the Commission for the Elimination of Corruption, known as KPK.
